health England has issued “UK Standards for Microbiology Investigations ID 21:
identification of Yersinia species.”
Members
of the genus Yersinia are
Gram-negative, catalase-positive and oxidase-negative, facultatively anaerobic
straight rods to coccobacilli. Cells are 0.5 - 0.8μm by 1-3μm in size and show
bipolar staining (“closed safety-pin appearance”). They have both respiratory
and fermentative type of metabolism.
